The origins of the iconic welcoming cat is derived from many, many incarnations of cats, both naughty and nice.
Within the strict formula, there is variation within the sameness. The layout of the left-hand text page (verso), is feline-morphic.
The major kiln regions of Japan were founded where clay, water, wood and talented industrious families operated their kilns generation upon generation. Each kiln and its associated craftspeople over centuries, produced their own “lucky cat”, either by conscious individuality for the market, or due to un-selfconscious idiosyncracy.
